Fresh Thinking on Transformation, Post 1 of 3

I do not think transformation is an end in itself. With the concept of transformational development I’m trying to move slightly away from the term “transformation”. Transformation became quite a “buzz word” and needs therefore clear definition. Both transformation and development can be defined as “moving towards God’s intentions.”

The word “moving” implies a process. The word “transformation” in itself does not clearly communicate that process. This is the reason why I like to call the process we’re involved with “transformational development.” Again, transformation is nothing in itself; it’s more a process of change than anything else. It describes the change from one level or thing to another level or thing. It’s like a row of books; it cannot effectively stand on its own. It needs something to support it. It need book ends on both sides. In the same way, transformation needs something that will support it on both sides. The two bookends needed to keep transformation “in place,” or to give it meaning, are Reformation and Conformation.

The process of transformational development starts with Reformation (Renewing of the Mind/Biblical Worldview – Rom. 12:2), which leads to a process of Transformation (Changing from one level of glory to another level of glory – 2 Cor. 3:18), which leads to Conformation (to the Image of Christ – Rom. 8: 29), which not only leads to ultimate glory to God, but leads to Christ becoming incarnate in and through His Church, saturating creation with God’s glory.

The Process of Transformational Development = Reformation -> Transformation -> Conformation -> Glory of God

To think strategically means to start with the end in mind. What is the end? The chief end of man is to know God and to enjoy Him forever. To use John Piper’s words, “Missions exist because worship doesn’t.” The chief end of man is therefore worshiping the living God consciously and constantly (Coram Deo).
