Christmas and the Nations

Christmas is a fitting occasion to reflect on the truth that Jesus sent us to disciple nations (see Matthew 28:19).

For example, the writers of some of our favorite Christmas hymns highlighted this dimension of the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Come, Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel’s Strength and Consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear Desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love
,

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar:
Seek the great Desire of nations;
Ye have seen his natal star:

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;

With th’ angelic host proclaim
Christ is born in Bethlehem!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Come, Desire of nations come,
Fix in us Thy humble home …

Next time you sing one of those, maybe a new reflection on the heart of Jesus Christ for the nations would be in order!

Merry Christmas to our readers everywhere.
