When is Truth Self-evident? Part 3 of 3

[From the previous post] The invisible God created the visible universe (Hebrews 11:3) and that visible universe reveals the invisible God and other things that are “self-evident.” We see this in two assertions. The first claim is found in Romans 1: 18-23 …

The Second Way the Visible Reveals the Invisible: Laws Written on the Heart

The second claim is from Romans 2: 14-15:

Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law,  since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them. (Romans 2:14-15, The Holy Bible : New International Version. 1996, c1984 (electronic ed.) Grand Rapids: Zondervan.)

In this text we read that it is self-evident that the universe is moral. The laws are inherent – written on the human heart. People’s conscience bears witness to this truth. But just as the external witness found in creation may be suppressed, so to the human conscience can become hardened.

The Creator of the universe is the law giver. He created the universe with moral, metaphysical and natural order. Just as the structure of things reveals the metaphysical order, so the law written in the heart reveals the moral law. The structure of the universe reveals the natural laws that govern the same. These are appropriated through human observation of reason and science.

So while I would agree with my friend Vishal that apart from revelation there is no truth, I would argue that truth is revealed explicitly in the word of God and self-evidently through the creation of God.
