Planned Parenthood has a courageous former employee to thank for losing business.

Planned Parenthood is, of course, America’s leading abortion provider, and active in many countries of the world. For those who know that, the name evokes a sense of grief, of mourning the evil and darkness of abortion. I think of Jesus’ parable of the wheat and the weeds (Matthew 13:24-30). He told us that his kingdom and Satan’s kingdom would grow concurrently. Too often we see the evil and darkness around us and become weary, longing to withdraw from the battle. But Christ’s parable reminds us that God is at work in the world. The kingdom of light is displacing the kingdom of darkness.

A case in point is the story of Abby Johnson, a former director of the Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, Texas. But Abby’s life changed, and the future of abortuaries everywhere is changing as a result.

In September 2009, Johnson assisted in an ultrasound- guided abortion on a thirteen-week-old baby. In her book, Unplanned, she describes what she saw: “The baby looked as if it were being wrung like a dishcloth, twirled and squeezed. And then it crumpled and began disappearing into the cannula before my eyes. The last thing I saw was the tiny, perfectly formed backbone sucked into the tube, and then it was gone.” Abby was so traumatized by what she witnessed that she quit her job and ended her career plans with Planned Parenthood where she had worked eight years and earned the 2008 Employee of the Year award. Abby is now a pro-life activist having moved from the forces of death to the forces for life.

Abby Johnson is now the chief research strategist for Live Action, a cutting edge, pro-life organization. Live Action conducts sting operations against Planned Parenthood “clinics” all over the United States. The abortuary Johnson directed has closed. And now record numbers of facilities that objectify women and their unborn children are closing.

This is good news for women and unborn babies. And it is a sign that in the midst of a dark culture, things can be turned around.

Let’s not despair at the darkness, but instead be beacons of light.
