There is much talk about the “culture wars”.  This is very real.  Yet, the battles raging in our nation do not start with culture.  They are a manifestation of warfare in the spiritual realm.

For many of us who have Christian hearts but materialistic minds, this idea is offensive or at least foreign.  However, if we really embrace our Bibles as the revelatory word of God, we need to recognize that God describes an entire spiritual world happening in conjunction with the natural world all the time.

Culture is the portal, the membrane through which these two worlds meet.

Culture is never neutral. It is the visible expression of the spiritual condition of a people. What we celebrate, what we tolerate, what we call “normal” reveals whether Christ or the enemy is influencing a society.  We visibly see whether God or the devil is gaining ground through the kind of cultures that are growing all around us and within us.

Frontmen, institutions, and the Great Disruptor are actively shaping the battlefield. Many of these people knowingly advance the culture of death and partner with demonic forces in our nation.  Symbols that once pointed to life and truth such as America being a “city set on a hill” have been captured and twisted. Reclaiming them is and important part of faithful occupation.

In order to become an occupying force we as believers must acknowledge that we fight not against flesh and blood.  We must engage in the spiritual battle as well as the natural battle.  This will develop us into well rounded, fully armored warriors who engage our enemies at the gates of influence with grace and truth.

For America’s 250th Anniversary

The founders understood that culture is downstream from worldview and spiritual reality. They did not treat symbols, education, or public discourse as neutral. The Geneva Bible shaped not only their politics but their view of what a virtuous people and a flourishing culture should look like. Reclaiming that integrated vision is part of recovering the foundations for the next 250 years. As we celebrate America’s semiquincentennial in 2026, this section of Occupy calls us to see culture not as a battlefield we avoid, but as a mission field we occupy with the same biblical conviction that shaped our founding documents.

Breaking the Sacred-Secular Divide

Many Christians have treated culture as “secular” and therefore off-limits or unimportant. This portion of Occupy shows that culture is one of the primary arenas of spiritual conflict. Ignoring it is not spiritual maturity — it is ignorant surrender.

Action Point

Choose one cultural symbol or institution in your sphere (a school curriculum, a local media outlet, a community event, social media language) that has been captured by the culture of death. Pray specifically for it, then ask the Lord for one wise, courageous step you can take to bring light into that space this month.

Culture is the portal. We are called to occupy it.
